Menu of Jeremy's Ale House East in Freeport, NY 11520

The scene at Jeremy’s wasn’t this vibrant when the bar first opened in the early 1980s. Now the seaport is a lively area with residential buildings, restaurants and stores, but back then, it was downright desolate. On an unusually warm Friday afternoon in April at Jeremy’s Ale House in the South Street Seaport, customers sipped beer from quart-size Styrofoam cups while “Jessie’s Girl” blared from the jukebox and the sun streamed in through the open windows. There was a distinct vacation feel in the air. Our newsletter hand-delivers the best bits to your inbox.

I’d say this was probably my second favorite item from the tasting. While I was digging into this fucker, Jeremy called out for Monstro to bring us over one of the Jersey tomatoes that he uses both at home and at the bar for salads, burger toppings and also just for snacking. These were picked fresh from near his hometown in southern New Jersey (he grew up in NJ, but he is originally from England). They have a slightly thicker skin than most tomatoes, but that helps to seal in the juicy freshness and sweet qualities of the fruit (yes, tomatoes are technically fruit, not veggies). These particular tomatoes were light on seeds and that slimy goop in the center, which was great for me because I hate that garbage.

Beers, Bras and Fried Seafood

Jeremy even sent us home with a bunch of fresh tomatoes. As it turns out, Jeremy’s serves up some pretty great pub food, and Jeremy himself is somewhat of a recipe innovator and amateur chef. Jeremy’s served as a safe house after 9/11 for people who were destined to still be in the area working cleanup. Jeremy kept the place open, and in that spirit of giving back to his community, he’s also throwing a fund raiser to help fight breast cancer at his other location, out in Freeport, Long Island. It used to be located a bit closer to the bridge, but it has since moved.

The Most Fun Bars In NYC Right Now

It hasn’t lost any of its charm and character, however, other than the awesome outdoor beer garden that it used to boast. The new spot has some elevated curbside seating near big windowed doors, which is cool in its own right. We first tried some of his lobster bisque, which currently is not on the menu. He does give it out to customers on occasion, but right now it is an off-menu hush-hush item.

The secret, Jeremy says, is in using heavy cream and half & half instead of milk, and a bit of sherry. You can see that a little shot of sherry is served alongside the chowder for mixing (or drinking, like I did). Jeremy has been in the saloon game for nearly 45 years now, first opening his doors back in 1970! We also talked about how the neighborhood changed so much between then and now, and how NYC laws governing food establishments caused him to make changes or operate differently, depending on the mayor and what safety concerns they pushed in their agendas. For the past 40 years, Jeremy’s has been filled with ice-cold beers and mouthwatering appetizers that are perfect during a leisurely afternoon or a crazy, bra-hanging night out with friends.

Jeremy's at the South Street Seaport calls itself the last great dive bar in New York City, and if you're not sure what that means exactly, let us provide you with some clarification. They sell $8-11 beers in quart containers, fried clam strips and jalapeño poppers, and 10 wings for $10.95. There's a man who sits in the same bar seat every night, and bras hanging from the ceiling—legend has it that when Jeremy’s was struggling in the 1980s, they’d pay people $25 for their bras to drum up business. (It worked.) Come here for a massive beer with fish and chips when you can't bear to fork over $23 for a dressed-up vodka soda. After quart container beers, you'll need to proceed with caution. Jeremy spent years perfecting New England clam chowder recipes at home, spoiling his family in the process, who can now no longer eat the chowder at restaurants because the homemade version was so much better.

You’ll always find eclectic crowds mingling no matter when you arrive at this South Street Seaport dive bar. One is spicy, with sliced cherry peppers included. Both have salami, ham, cheese, lettuce and a nice vinegary sandwich dressing on top. The bread is fresh, crusty Italian bread – the only thing worthy of such a sandwich. Monstro hollows out a bit of the bread’s interior so that all the fillings can fit inside the sandwich without being too massive to bite down on.

LAX is the most popular airport, since it is the largest airport in the entire state of California. There’s also Ontario International Airport located in Ontario and John Wayne Airport in Orange County that are a little further out from LA, but still an easy drive. Situated in Venice, Dreamers & Lover’s is for "the non-cookie-cutter bride looking for a unique and comfortable wedding dress," as noted on their website. The showroom offers a perfectly curated selection of ethereal lace gowns—all of which are made in California—in a range of price points from $2,000 to $3,000. Located in Santa Monica, En Blanc is a highly-rated bridal boutique for brides-to-be with classic and modern tastes.

At couples' counseling, Ingrid tells Billy that she has had enough of his workaholic attitude and stubbornness and wants a divorce; their counselor tells them to tell their daughters right away. Ingrid wants to announce it later that day after Sofia arrives for a visit, but Sofia first announces that she is engaged to be married to fellow lawyer Adan Castillo and that they want to marry in one month. The interior of this home might not look familiar because many of the scenes were filmed in Pasadena, California.

The Best Bridal Salons and Flagships in Los Angeles

Father of the Bride is a beloved classic movie that has captured the hearts of audiences for decades. Released in 1991, this comedy film stars Steve Martin as George Banks, a father who goes through a whirlwind of emotions as he prepares for his daughter’s wedding. While the movie itself is known for its charming storyline and hilarious moments, one element that has piqued the curiosity of many viewers is the iconic house where much of the film takes place. However, it wasn't just the wedding scenes that were filmed in its spacious backyard.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting married in Los Angeles.

Another view of the pot rack in the distance as Annie and her parents gather in the breakfast/eating area of the kitchen. This house has a back stairway and we get a glimpse of it on the right side of this scene. In this movie, the camera spent more time lavishing attention on the house and giving us a better look into some of the rooms, like the kitchen.

Some of our favorites and most epic wedding venues include the hip SmogShoppe and the gorgeous Terranea Resort. From Old Hollywood glamour to beachy boho and designer chic (among other descriptions), there's no single phrase that can fully encapsulate the style of a Los Angeles bride. Luckily, that isn't an issue, as the buzzing city is packed with bridal salons and flagships that feature dresses perfect for every surfer babe, downtown gal, and everyone in between.

Its gourmet kitchen boasts Thermador appliances and a 90-bottle wine refrigerator, and the traditional architecture is exquisitely finished with hardwood floors, custom cabinets and built-ins. There’s also a detached, 600-square-foot room with its own full bath. At the beginning of 1991’s Father of the Bride, George Banks’s (played by Steve Martin) picture-perfect home at 24 Maple Drive in San Marino, California serves as an emblem of his picture-perfect life.

Last week I featured Steve Martin’s traditional white house from Father of the Bride, so today I thought it would be fun to take a look at how it changed for the sequel, Father of the Bride Part II. It’s a private residence of course so any trips there should be respectful and discreet, making sure not to trespass on the property or disturb residents and neighbors. There’s been plenty of that in the past; according to betweennapsontheporch.com, the young couple who purchased the property shortly after the movie was made even had people ringing their doorbell and asking for a tour.

If you’re looking for an outdoor activity, behind the beaches is a paved bike path that is perfect for biking, walking or running. Said to be at 24 Maple Drive in posh San Marino, Calif., the charming two-story clapboard residence is actually located at 843 S. The backyard scenes, including the tear-jerking basketball segments, were shot at a similar-looking Colonial a little over two miles away at 500 N. Its beauty, charm, and significance within the film have made it an object of fascination and curiosity. With the real-life location finally discovered, fans can now experience a piece of movie history and appreciate the enduring allure of this iconic house.

Several dedicated fans have even taken it upon themselves to visit potential locations and compare them to the house seen in the movie. This determination and enthusiasm to solve the mystery highlight the deep connection that viewers have with the film and their desire to have a tangible connection to its world. The search for the actual location of the house from Father of the Bride has been quite a journey for fans. Over the years, numerous methods and techniques have been employed to uncover the whereabouts of this iconic property. Some have scoured through countless real estate listings, while others have relied on online forums and discussions to gather information. I’m pretty sure all dads sweat the speech they’re socially mandated to deliver at their daughter’s wedding.

It’s no wonder that viewers have been captivated by its beauty and have been eager to locate the real-life counterpart of this cinematic gem. I think it’s time to give a toast to a movie that will go down in history as one of the best there has ever been. A view of the upstairs hallway as George talks with his son, Matty, played by Keran Culkin. 15 Trending Exterior House Colors for 2024

gray house black trim

This is a simple looking house that has a pop of color with a red door. Think dark gray vinyl siding punctuated by pillars or sections of stone veneer. Such combinations not only boost curb appeal but also allow for maintenance ease and durability. It’s this harmony between the organic roughness of stone and the smoothness of vinyl that creates a visual symphony, making homes stand out in any neighborhood. Dark colors have become one of the new staples in modern home design, both for exteriors as well as interiors.

Medium Grey, White, & Dark Grey

Gray houses trimmed out with crisp, clean white is a beautiful look for just about any style home ranging from a classical farmhouse to an ultra modern estate. Because gray siding comes in so many different tones with underlying hues, it works well on a huge variety of properties. Gray siding with white trim is probably one of the most versatile exterior home color combos you can pick.

Modern Grey House Exterior Color Schemes

Introducing shades of red – be it brick, crimson, or wine can transform a home’s silhouette, making it stand tall and proud against the skyline. The trick lies in selecting a hue that complements the gray while ensuring the home remains in harmony with its surroundings. The shade of black, its matte or glossy finish, and even its width can dramatically alter a home’s appearance. Here, we’ll delve into the art of using black trim effectively, revealing how it can transform the mundane into the magnificent.

Modern Grey House Exterior Color Schemes (With Pictures)

It also has a simple and small patio leading up to the house. It looks to be constructed from some type of block, perhaps a cinder block based on the block accent at the end of the tiny walkway. However, the combination of the different parts of this house blends well and ties together nicely. This Cape Cod house has three dormers that are typical of a Cape Cod. This house also has simple landscaping in front to complete the look. My blog seeks to help you solutions for house problems and a collection of simple recipes that are perfect for busy people.

The application gets even easier because both white and grey are quite neutral. Worthy of note is the flooring, which adds an extra facet to the color palette. But having it there makes the design bold while adding some gradient. Another option would be to add some color with your masonry. Even though gray is your most predominant color you still need to consider the overall color palette of the home. Even with the most minimalist design you’ll still be using 4 or 5 different colors or variations of the same color.

Mid-toned Grey House With Black Front Door

White trim brightens the home and helps the blue really pop. Almost any shade of blue works great with a shade of gray siding this light nut this royal blue shade is a nice choice. It’s dark enough the contrast the lighter siding but not too dark that it becomes overbearing. I love the look of a gray house with richly stained real wood doors. The color of the stain and gray siding matter a lot but to me this combination is beautiful. It’s super important to use a wide variety of values on a home and this one uses them all.

Q: Can I mix different shades of grey for my house exterior?

Incorporating native plants and natural elements can help your home blend seamlessly into its surroundings while still maintaining its distinct visual appeal. To enhance this style further, consider adding large windows or glass doors to allow plenty of natural light into your home while enjoying beautiful views of your surroundings. Incorporating wooden accents can create warmth against these cool tones for an inviting atmosphere inside your home.

What Colors Are Best For Me To Pair With Gray Exterior?

I don’t know about you, but I am all for a house that has a secret incorporation of color – particularly stained wood! The medium tone of gray siding allows the darker gray of the patio furniture to not blend in. Stone has also been used at the base of this design, though it has nothing to do with basements and has been added simply for the visual aspect.

Matching Landscaping: Letting Nature Complement Your Home

In a two-story grey house with black trim, the placement and style of windows can have a significant impact on the home’s exterior appearance. Opt for windows that are proportionate to the size of the house and complement the overall design aesthetic. When selecting exterior materials for your grey house with black trim, consider the impact of various textures and finishes on the overall aesthetic. Smooth or rough-textured siding can create contrasting effects that enhance the visual appeal of your home’s design.

Charcoal Grey – Grey House With Black Trim Ideas

Furthermore, grey serves as an excellent backdrop for other colors, making it an ideal choice for creating striking and visually appealing color schemes. This eye-catching two-story grey house with black trim features a gabled roof that adds architectural interest and height to the home’s exterior. The combination of neutral grey siding and bold black trim creates a visually striking and timeless design. A gray house with black trim is a popular trend in both traditional and modern homes.

Gray House With Blue Shutters

Sided in light gray, it offers subdued tones with a darker gray roof and a matching chimney. A dark gray home and a light gray home banks the ends of these townhouses, proving that you don’t need a bright or garish color to stand out from the crowd. The clearest example here is the use of black on the doors, stone, and roof trim to let these parts stand out over the grey siding, paint, and roof shingles. Lastly, remember that the landscaping of your grey house with black trim should be well-maintained to ensure that it remains an attractive and welcoming environment. Regular pruning, watering, and fertilizing can help keep your garden looking lush and vibrant throughout the seasons. The combination of the two colors creates an elegant contrast that adds depth to the facade.

White and Gray Contemporary

Benjamin Moore’s Deep River is truly dynamic in that it is dark and features blue undertones. In the rendering above, the intensity of the Deep River siding is complemented by the warmth of the Revere Pewter brick. If the main color of your house exterior is a shade of gray, you can use several complementary colors to create the perfect color scheme.

So, while charcoal grey is the dominant color, there are many facets to the building. The varying hues of the bricks add some dimension to the structure, much like these grey houses. It wouldn’t be so easy to achieve such detail with many other colors.

The blue stone looks great with gray siding and a blue front door because those colors are found within it. The result is a very harmonious color scheme where individual elements can still stand out. As long as you choose elements that are similar in color but have a different value then you’ll be OK.

While the structure is predominantly a modern home, the wall stones add some antiqueness. All in all, the touch of modern and antique will do more than enough to tickle anyone’s visual interest. It’s a hard question to answer considering all the beautiful variations there are. Luckily, if you want a gray home there’s no shortage of example pics to draw inspiration from. Gray goes with just about anything and is considered a neutral so if your designing a gray home you won’t have that much trouble finding colors that’ll work. But don’t get the wrong idea, just because there are plenty of options doesn’t mean your work will be easy.

This tone is not too bright but is more than enough to steal attention. This next combination is an excellent selection if you are a beach-style fan. Another detail that we love about the design example that you can see in the picture is the addition of different colors for creating and contrasting look. Besides, some other design elements also have a similar tone, including the base and top of the columns, the stair rails, and even the wooden fence.

The rusticity of brown, the serenity of blue, and the sophistication of gray come together in a harmonious blend. This trio can be played with in various elements like woodwork, tiles, or even garden landscapes, crafting an exterior that’s both grounded and dreamy. The roof, often considered a home’s fifth facade, offers a vast canvas for experimentation.

For example, frame-rich beige siding with crisp white soffit, gutters and corner strips. The roof is another great area that can be used to offset beige siding, too. In means, if you cannot find the exact color that you want, you can always choose the second option. This way, you can color the stucco wall with any tone that you want. The reason is because of the boldness.Just look at the picture of the transitional exterior above as an example. A design like this is always successful in stealing attention.

This sleek grey siding is complemented by white trimming, as well as a richly stained raw-wood porch design. Landing somewhere in the middle with a medium shade of gray, this design not only has white trimming but it also integrates stone – in neutral shades of red! These reds are intentionally faded and dusty, with only a few bold strokes here and there, and the shades range from red, to orangeish, to practically bare. Another choice made by the people who designed this home or the home’s porch was to incorporate more lightness with the stone pillars. It’s a patternless mix of white and different shades of gray that effortlessly fits in with the chosen color palette. A bold door acts as a focal point, breaking the continuum of the gray and black aesthetic.

Joffrey Ballet's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' review: A joyous celebration

When Campanini died in December 1919 he was replaced by the composer Gino Marinuzzi, who staged his own Jacquerie as the opening production of the 1920–21 season. The company consisted largely of the remnants of the Chicago Opera Association, a company that produced seven seasons of grand opera in the Auditorium Theatre from 1915 until its bankruptcy in 1921. Your ticket to a Lyric Opera production doesn’t just allow you to see the show, it also gives you access to a pre-opera talk.

The Lyric Opera House is a majestic setting for entertaining on any scale

Pat Shymanski can also be found making coffee drinks and scones in the welcome center’s coffee shop. Champlain Ave., on display just in time for National Park Week, includes the furniture and artifacts that a working-class Italian family might have owned. On the wall there’s a 3-D light box of Venice’s grand canal and a side table is topped by an ashtray and Lucky Stripes cigarettes. The television is a 1949 model and a rotary phone is part of a table and chair arrangement. An album by Mario Lanza is ready to play on the old record player.

About The Chicago Traveler

Fir that reason the orchestra is, or ought to be seated in the midst of a huge sounding board. I never heard the prologue of “Aida” sound as opulent as it did last night under Mr. Polacco’s baton. The strings were rich and full toned without suspicion of the scrape of bows, the woodwinds sang without nasality, the brasses resounded with never a thought of a snort. It would seem that the back of the stage is a sounding board also. Mr. Marshall’s “Celeste Aida,” frequently a cause for rejoicing in past years, was doubly so here. Mis Van Gordon was never so fine as in this performance., To a voice nothing short of gorgeous she had added a complete understanding of the dramatic value of the musical pause, altogether making a performance such as even she had never given before.

Available Spaces

It is unusually wide, but it also is unusually deep and its occupants will not be visible to those sitting in main floor seats. Its floor, like the floor of the stage, can be raised or lowered by electrical machinery. FROM ACROSS THE RIVER, the opera building presents a magnificent picture of modern architecture.

Lyric Opera House history

That was a wholly unacceptable situation to Chicago Evening Post music critic Karleton Hackett. In early 1909, he began making noise that Chicago needed its own opera company. He appealed to the city’s civic pride, of which it had plenty to spare, pointing to the Chicago Symphony and its Orchestra Hall as an example of what Chicago could do when it decided it wanted something. With the popularity of the Grand Opera Festival in 1885, Ferdinand Peck confirmed that desire.

The purchase and renovation was made possible by Lyric's $100-million "Building on Greatness" capital campaign. The Lyric Opera of Chicago/Chicago Symphony Orchestra Facilities Fund helped launch Lyric's campaign with a $50 million commitment. The famous painted fire curtain (depicting the parade scene from Aida) and the interior decoration details of the Lyric Opera House were created by American artist Jules Guerin in a palette of salmon pinks, roses, olives, golds and bronzes.

During that period, literally millions of pieces of advertising literature have been distributed, and the press clippings collected might be measured by the rod. Only the first performance in the new opera house has taken place. Special regulations will givern traffic in streets around the new Civic Opera house at the opening performance tinight and nightly until the season closes.

Not only was the Auditorium beautiful and acoustically perfect, renting it would have the added bonus of preventing Oscar Hammerstein from being able to bring his company to Chicago and compete the way he did in New York. The Auditorium opened in 1899, providing Chicago with its very own opera house – yet it still had to wait for the Metropolitan Opera and, later, the Manhattan Opera Company to visit from New York. But when the discussion got around to the name of the proposed huge office and bank building the talks suddenly ended. Apparently the other parties didn’t want to lose their identity in a “Field” building, he said.

In tests which I followed a voice released from the stage in the volume of an ordinary telephone conversation carried clearly and without echo to the topmost seat in the top balcony. It is a rose-hued grotto at the base of a forty-five story, twenty million dollar commercial structure, the rentals from which are to sustain opera in perpetuity. During the hour and a half between the opening of the doors and the parting of the curtains the audience will find overwhelming reaqsons to be impressed with the splendor and dignity of opera’s permanent home. Rising 270 feet from the ground level will be the main bocy of the edifice, 21 stories high. It will have a frontage of 400 feet on Wacker drive, 190 feet on Madison street, and 150 feet on Washington boulevard. Details of the plans for what is regarded as Chicago’s outstanding cultural achievement of the decade—the permanent home of the Chicaqgo Civic Opera company—were made public yesterday for the first time by Samuel Insull, president of the organization.

In the Lisciotto home, there are chenille bedspreads in the two small bedrooms. The former kitchen/dining room, which was used for cooking, eating, entertaining and more, was also the room where Lisciotto helped plan meetings that proved crucial to the character of the Pullman neighborhood. An urban redevelopment plan in the 1960s would have bulldozed swaths of homes George Pullman had built around 1880 to house workers at his railcar factory. Both Shymanski and his wife, Pat Shymanski, a former attorney who is president of the Bielenberg Foundation, have lived in the community for years and volunteered countless hours to ensure its place in history.

Counting the three floors under the peak roof, the building rises to a height of 45 stories. Its exterior is largely Indiana limestone and its most impressive exterior feature perhaps is the 400 foot long colonnade along the Wacker side. Costuming Shows Change.Though this is necessarily an essay in the matter of acoustics, it is advisable to add that the Civic Opera company foes itself rather well in the matter of visual display. One seems to recognize the scenery of “Aide” from former days in the Auditorium, but it was a rich setting then and it is a rich setting now. At the same time one discovers some new items in the matters of costuming, a king and a princess, for instance, who had become more regal in bearing and appearance than ever before. Mr. Bennett has told you something about the visual aspects of this magnificent theater.

In the 1930s the firm created the massive Merchandise Mart Building, also on the Chicago River. The world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago performs in one of North America's most beautiful opera houses, the Lyric Opera House at 20 North Wacker Drive. Admittedly, I had not approached this outing as a fan of opera—I was inspired to attend as part of College Night at the Lyric Opera, which offered discounted rates for students. But when I stepped through the great doors of that tall, ornate building, my skepticism began to dissipate. The building was beautiful, with high ceilings and chandeliers, and the people were dressed fancier than anybody I went around town with. Sometimes quiet and static, sometimes loud and intense, it combines a simple episodic narrative with all manner of movement, some of it even balletic with toe shoes.

Unparalleled instruction and performance opportunities for emerging artists.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago bought the space it was renting and the venue underwent a major renovation in 1993, which was completed in 1996. The hour-long tour includes the stage, costume and wig rooms, prop and scenery departments, dressing rooms, orchestra pit, and even a walk along the catwalk — six stories above the stage! The tours are surprisingly interesting and also great for movie buffs, since much of the make up and prop departments resemble those of movie sets.

Located in the heart of Chicago at 20 N.Wacker Drive, you’ll want to leave some extra time to get to the theater. Bus stops for routes 20, 56, 60,124, and J14 are easily located across the street from the Opera at Madison andFranklin. In 1940, Chicago’s opera reorganized yet again, calling its sixth iteration the Chicago Opera Company. This version would last for six years, but when it closed, the city wouldn’t have a resident opera company for almost a decade. The Civic Opera Association christened its new auditorium on November 4, 1929, with a performance of—what else—Aida.

Additionally, 170 miles of electrical wiring and 38 miles of electrical conduit were installed throughout the Lyric Opera House. A new 500-pound mainstage curtain was installed, made of 580 yards of heavy-weight wool velour and silk fringe to replicate the original 1929 curtain. All the bronze decorative features and railings in the Lyric Opera House were polished to a just-like-new sheen. A massive $100-million renovation of the backstage area commenced in 1993, and continued during Lyric's off-seasons (mid-March through early September) through 1996. The improvements made during this project allowed Lyric Opera to continue producing world-class opera well into the 21st century.

Pullman House Project spotlights resident who fought off city bulldozers

Chicago had gotten its opera from New York, and now it would get its opera company because of New York. The Chicago Tribune announced the good news on November 4, 1909, and on November 3, 1910, Chicago Grand Opera Company opened its first season with Verdi’s Aida. John wasn’t about to put his city’s opera in the hands of someone like that. The next day, the Met’s Otto Kahn sent John a cablegram claiming he could guarantee Chicago a first-class opera company in a modern theater.

Rising to a height of forty-two stories on the western outskirts of the loop, the structure enclosing the world’s largest and finest opera house covers the block bounded by the Chicago river, Madison street, Wacker drive, and Washington street. Mr. Insull believes that a new grand opera house will also cut the expense of present opera in Chicago. He would have the building as a civic center for the downtown district. As long as the city continues, he sees the need of a large commercial organization to promote the business and industrial welfare of the municipality. So he could lease less space in the new structure to the Chicago Association of Commerce. He would have other like organizations occupy space in the proposed building.

Comprising a 45-story office tower with two 22-story wings, the multi-use complex is home to the world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago. A close stylistic cousin to the high-rise towers of New York City's Rockefeller Center, completion of the Civic Opera House actually preceded Rock Center by a few years and, unlike that project, it made good on the inclusion of an opera. Lyric's transportation plan has designated areas for both taxi and rideshare pick-up. A post-show taxi line forms on Madison Street; wait times may vary depending on taxi availability. Rideshare users who reserve through Uber and Lyft users may direct your driver to pick you up on southbound Wacker Drive south of Madison Street, using the address 10 S.

The Civic Opera Building is a 45-story office tower (plus two 22-story wings) located at 20 North Wacker Drive in Chicago. The building opened November 4, 1929, and has an Art Deco interior. It contains a 3,563-seat opera house, the Civic Opera House, which is the second-largest opera auditorium in North America. The opera house is the permanent home of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the home of the Joffrey Ballet since 2021.

From its lofty foyer of travertine rock with rose and gold to its fire curtain which seems to march across the vision with a pageant of two score heroes and heroines of classic opera, the house is a jewel casket. The exterior of the building, which it is hoped to have in readiness for the opening of the opera season in the fall of 1929, will probably be faced with limestone for three stories, and the remainder with brick and terra cotta. The general tone will be a soft gray, with conservative employment of color. Mr. Insull said that grand opera must have sufficient transportation so that everybody may patronize it as easily and as frequently as they do theaters. Chicago’s nickname as The Second City (thanks to that infamous fire, not a comparison reference) stands strong in opera, too. The Civic Opera House is the second largest opera theater in North America, with 3,563 seats. That’s only slightly smaller than the largest, The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, which seats 3,794. Built in 1929 and fully restored in 1996, the Civic Opera House is a Chicago landmark and a spectacular hybrid of Art Nouveau and Art Deco architectural styles.

Ticket lobbies will be placed adjacent to the entrance, but out of the way of persons coming in or leaving.
